Health Sciences Symposium Committee

Purpose: The main purpose of the Health Science Symposium Committee is to organize, facilitate, and promote the Health Science Symposium, a collaborative initiative between Collin College Biological Sciences and Health Professions students. The symposium showcases research completed by Health Professions students as part of their semester-long research project. To present/participate at the symposium, each Health Professions student is tasked with submitting a complete research project comprised of an abstract, research paper, poster board, and some specific maker-space or tangible presentation related artifact that creatively demonstrates that student’s depth of and interpretation of the topic of research. Collin College Biological Sciences students serve as student-peer reviewers/mentors, critiquing and guiding their Health Professions researchers/mentees throughout the research process. Students then present and exhibit their research in person at the Health Science Symposium, providing them the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge they have acquired and engage in Q&A sessions. Posters, research papers, artifacts, and oral presentations are then evaluated by Biological Sciences students, who judge and rank participants’ presentations. The resulting best research project is awarded a special prize from Collin College. The Health Science Symposium provides the Collin Biological Sciences students the opportunity to serve as mentors, peer-reviewers and/or judges while providing the Health Professions students the opportunity and the venue (Conference Center at Central Park Campus) to present their research in an authentic collegiate fashion. In addition, the HSS serves to assist Health Professions students to glean public speaking experience while honing their presentation skill acumen, preparing them for future career opportunities.

How is the committee selected? It is a volunteer process and is open to any faculty/staff interested in the project and idea behind it. It started as a collaboration between dual-credit Health Sciences Academy professors Tanya Sanchez and Karrie Newby and Anatomy and Physiology professors Roberta Cravo and Robert Brown in the Fall of 2016. All the other members are professors from the McKinney Campus Biology Department and the Health Professions faculty.

Quality Enhancement Plan Implementation Team

Purpose: The team reviews literature, data, practice and technology, both internal and external, and makes recommendations to the Leadership Team on the content, direction, and integration of the Quality Enhancement Plan.

How are the committees selected? Original members were selected by the Leadership Team from volunteers who submitted a rationale for their interest in participating and their potential effectiveness on the team. The Quality Enhancement Plan is in transition towards integration within the college, therefore some committees have been combined for more effective and efficient collaboration. The team is made up of faculty, staff, and administrators from across the District.
