NutritionNutrition

Nutrition and eating are topics surrounded by endless opinions, diets, and claims of what is “correct.” Getting the right nutrition does not have to be complicated and should be tailored to the individual.

There are a few simple tools you can use in order to boost and fine-tune your nutrition such as calculating your metabolic rate, food journaling, or trying holistic-based approaches. Consult your primary-care physician before embarking on any nutrition or wellness program.

Knowing how many calories to eat doesn’t have to be complicated and doesn’t require a personal chef or nutritionist. There are many calculators online where you can type in a few numbers and find your caloric needs based on your level of activity. This means that even if you do zero exercise, you can still eat a certain amount that will keep you in a caloric deficit or surplus, whichever is appropriate.

When food journaling, there are several food-tracking websites and apps available, or you can use pen and paper. A food scale is accurate, but if you don’t have one you can use the information on labels, or even estimate your portions. Tracking what you eat can be daunting and even tedious but doing it for one day is beneficial. You will then have an idea of what you are eating and if any adjustments need to be made. From there, small changes over time will go a long way.

Many diets exist, and it can be overwhelming to choose one. The appropriate nutrition plan will likely adopt aspects of nutrition from many different philosophies.

Find resources, videos, and more on a variety of food topics on Burnalong. Again, be sure to discuss your nutritional goals and plans with your doctor or provider.

Fall Pumpkins With the holidays around the corner, it is important to take care of not just our individual health but our family and community health. We can do so by working on ourselves, staying physically active, and taking care of our mental well-being through breathing exercises or mindfulness practices such as these.

The better we feel, the better our relationships with others will be. There are many ways to work on our physical and mental health, with options for people of all ages and abilities, in groups or individuals.

Walking is a great option that improves overall health and decreases the risk of serious disease by 50%. Aquatic exercise is an excellent option for people of all ages. Chair yoga is a popular choice for folks with an injury or mobility issue.

When it comes to engaging with others in a positive way, we can lower stress and stay more at ease by not taking things personally. The more we employ this strategy, the quicker we can let go of stress and be in better shape to interact with others, thus leading to not just healthier people but a healthier community.

Tips for Family Fitness

Carve out 30 minutes for “family fitness time”. Take turns choosing the activity:

  • Go on a scavenger hunt
  • Take a nature discovery walk
  • Turn household chores into fun family activities
  • Learn a new sport together
  • Involve the family pets!

Regular walks may help with pet behavior problems and improve the pets’ overall health.
